Teflon tape adequate for spout diverter?

I have two shower tubs. The tub spouts have popup valves that diverts water to the shower head.

I was planning to use teflon tape for the threads on the pipe I screw the spouts on. But I read it was good to use pipe thread compound.

I am very paranoid about shower leaks now, and I wonder if teflon tape would be adequate seal for the spouts?

You can use tape if you like, wrap clockwise around thread.

Fix it right the first time, so you won't have to fix it a 2nd time.
