Tapping noise from water line

Since I've been in my house (5 years) there has been a tapping noise coming from the area behind/above the gas water heater when it is heating water. I've heard of pipes "banging" before, but this sounds more like a drip or clicking sound. When the water heater fires up, it is more constant, and gradually it slows down until it stops entirely. I've seen those water hammer devices that you can sweat inline that absorb the pressure, but I'm not sure if that is what I need.

Sounds like minerals "cooking" in the heater to me. How old is the unit?

Sounds to me like the expansion of your hot water line as the water heater is heating the water.

Does it sound a bit like muffled popcorn or marbles bouncing around?
If so, likely mineral deposits in bottom of tank getting stirred up by heating.

Thermal expansion.
If you can find the exact point source perhaps a lubricant between the surfaces that are rubbing together may help.

I guess it was the mineral deposits...I flushed the tank out and I haven't heard it since. Thanks to everyone for their help!
