Tankless water heater indoor or outdoor?

Among all that I'm doing, I am considering a tankless water heater. With all the credits and rebates, it really brings the price down and considering the state of most of what is in the house, 7 years old on a low end 40 gallon water heater that was improperly vented seems like enough reason to at least consider this.

What I wonder about is whether it would be better to get an indoor or outdoor unit... An outdoor unit obviously saves the cost of running ventilation, and with the vent kit being $100 or more that's a cost that would be worth avoiding if I could... But I'm wondering if an outdoor installation can be problematic in winter with supplying heated water as well, or if it presents pipe freezing risks? This would be in Michigan.

Tankless water heater indoor or outdoor?

IMO. I would install indoors. Weather takes it's toll on outdoor appliances. Also, consider these tankless units should be flushed every 6 months to 1 yr depending on water quality. It's not fun to do this maintance in freezing weather

Indoor for sure. What you save on ducting you'll lose on the gas bill. I'm sure they have to work harder to compensate being in -30's vs +15 environment. Maintenance is also much easier if the unit is indoors.

Outdoor units are designed for cali/florida, you'd probably be the only person in michigan with an outdoor heater. don't do it, spend the extra bucks on the proper venting kit
