Switch shower diverter from fixture to spout?

I am replacing the shower and tub fixtures in a circa '60s bathroom. The shower diverter on the current fixture is incorporated into the plumbing unit. (It's a valve that you pull out or push in to activate.)

I want to replace the fixture (not the plumbing) with a new one that has the diverter on the tub spout since these are most available without special order.

My question is: Can I simply remove the integrated shower diverter and replace it with a pipe plug and then install the spout model?

Thanks. Al
