Default Sweating a male adapter

I'm replumbing a fair amount of my heating system. there are several threaded connections that are joined with copper male (or female) adapters. In order to keep from burning up my teflon tape and pipe dope, I've been sweating a a nipple on the adapter prior to threading it up. Just wondering if this is correct. Can you sweat a threaded copper fitting that is already connected up?
