Suspect cause of slow toilet flushing

Geez- talk about more projects (currently have 3-4 threads going...LOL)

Should I start with roto rooting the vertical "air" pipe on top of roof of house? If so, what /why does that do the trick sometimes? What size snake/roto diameter ?

Thanks!

I'd start looking under the house at the clean out or remove the toilet and go through there.
If it was a vent all the fixtures would be slow on that line and there would be bubbling or guggles in the sinks or toilet.

The reason that people go through the vent is that there are no traps in the way to interfere with the snake. Take off the toilet first like Joe says, and rapidly pour a 5 gallon bucket down the pipe, see what happens. also auger the trap in the toilet, especially if kids live there. They love to watch doo-dads sink.

ok, jag. But why is it not the same as dumping a 5 gal pail of water in the toilet itself- why does one have to remove the stinkin thing, to dump the water (presuming the toilet "curve" is free)? (Oh- no kids, daughter is pretty careful about drains and stuff. )

Yeah go ahead, try that first. Presuming. Good Point, but how does that isolate the toilet from the pipe?

if you dump a 5 gal bucket straight into the bowl and if it flushes ok ..you have bad toilet... ..trap could be loaded with scale...ben sr

OK, I get it now- thanks people. I will try this .
Also, update- found out the sink NEXT to the toilet is slow TOO! So, could be drain, or could be air "vent" tube, right?

location se? if you from around the se united states the tree roots are probably from bushes where the cast iron or whatever ran about a foot or two outside the slab for rough in. after rough in a cheaper thin pipe was probably used to finish to street or septic tank. if the house has a little age on it an old black fiber core pipe was probably used to do this. at the point the rough in pipe and the fiber core meet is probably your problem. builders planted shrubs up side of the house and roots from this grew in the line where they were just tapped together. locate this and then look downhill from there.
