Supply Pipe sizing for bathroom/kitchen
I'm remodeling the 3rd floor of my house and it has a full bathroom and will have some kind of small simple kitchen (probably just a sink, maybe a dishwasher). The old pipes were 3/4" galvanized but they weren't hidden inside of walls so I will run new ones - they also supplied water to another kitchenet on the 2nd floor.

I'm trying to decide what pipe size to use but am having trouble finding information. The pipe coming into my house is 1" and stays 1" along most of its 30ft run along the basement. I have good pressure (at least 40psi). I think I'll just put in a 3/4" cold line like it was before, but am worried that a 3/4" hot line will make the hot water take a long time. So I'm thinking of doing a 1/2" hot line to the bathroom, and a seperate 1/2" hot line to the kitchen. Does this make sense? Could I just use a single 1/2" hot line? The fixtures would be about 25ft from the water heater in the basement, including a 14ft vertical. I'll be using PEX.

Thanks for your ideas!

3/4 will be fine. You can run two fixtures off a 1/2in line. You could run two hot lines, one to the bathroom, and one that tees off for each kitchen or any combination that doesn't have more than two fixtures on your half inch line. I would recommend using 3/4, if waiting for hot water is a problem install a recirculating line.

Thanks for the responses. Just to clarify, I am only supplying the full bath and kitchen on the 3rd floor, the kitchen on the second floor has been removed.

So you both reccomend that I do a 3/4" hot line instead of two 1/2" hot lines?

I recommend a 3/4 line with a 1/2in re-circulating line.
