Sump Pump Spraying Water

We have a sump pump in our basement. It has just started to spray water out of the hole to the point that water is puddling a couple of feet out all the way around the hole.

There is a cover over the hole but it does have a slotted opening for the pipes. We went to a local hardware store and they told us to purchase a cover that would more seal off the hole. This does not make sense to me as we have been in our home for 9 years and this is first time we have had this problem.

Does anybody know what could be wrong with the sump pump or some things for us the check? Do we need to install a new sump pump?

I would first check the connections of the discharge pipe (the pipe that carries teh water out or the hole and out of your house) to the pump. Make sure they are tight. One connection where the discharge pipe connects right to the pump and somewhere there should be a check valve which would have connections on either on of it. If one of these connections is bad then when the pump comes on and pushes water through the discaharge pipe it will spew out of the leeky connections.

You can get the pump to come on by puring a bucket of water into the hole. Pour soome water in and see where the water is coming from....you will need to remove the cover to see and you may get wet...

Have fun!
