Sump pump chugging

How do i keep my sump pump from chugging while the water is draining after the pump shuts off, get a terrible boom ...boom...boom for about a minute after it shuts off, got a check valve above the pump in the pit, went as far as installing a check valve outside thinking it needed more air to help clear the line faster, helped but still getting that annoying banging
