Sump Pump Check Valve Mystery

I recently noticed water splashing back up out of the sump pump basin after the pump had been run. We had been living in the house for over a year and had never noticed that before although the pump doesn't run all that often. The water was coming out of the PVC pipe where it met the pump and the force was so great that it sprayed up and out onto the laundry room floor. So, I figured the check valve was bad and needed replaced....however, upon inspection, I do not see that a check valve was ever installed in the piping to begin with!

I thought that was a standard part of any sump pump installation. The piping runs vertically for 8 feet so I figured that would have been a given. Is there any chance it was not installed because the pump was supposed to be powerful enough to kick out the water with such force that little would come back down the pipe? Other than ignorance or laziness, would there be ANY reason not to install the check valve? Also, I don't know why it was not noticed before just recently....and the home inspector checked it out before moving in and it was not doing that.

Sump Pump Check Valve Mystery

It would not be surprising to find a pump without the back flow valve---I suggest you cut the pipe and install one----not having one causes early pump failure because it must pump out the same water every time the pump shuts off---

Sump Pump Check Valve Mystery

I am definitely planning to install one. Researching different check valves reveals that plastic valves are typically not good and metal ones are durable. HD has one by Everbilt that claims the following: "the industry’s most durable check valve flapper. This is the world’s most reliable sump pump check valve."
Sounds great to me! haha....but is it true??
