Ive finally got all the ice out of the line took all the old insulation off the pipe and installed a frost king water pipe heat cable on my sub pump line out side and insulated 10' from the house out. Know theres is 6' of pipe with exposed water pipe heat cable, on my sub pump line outside is this ok. I guess my question is can you leave the frost king water pipe heat cable exposed to the elements or should i go and insulate the whole subpumb line out side?
Unless the heating cable instructions say otherwise, the pipe, cable and all, needs to be covered with insulation. Otherwise the heat from the cable will go off into the atmosphere.
Any vertical or nearly vertical part outdoors coming up from the pump pit and above the frost line must be heated. The horizontal or nearly horizontal part above the frost line should be heated, and if there are any dips (also called bellies) or even long perfectly horizontal portions where water may collect, must be heated.
The good conscientious technician or serviceperson will carry extra oils and lubricants in case the new pump did not come with oil or the oil was accidentally spilled, so the service call can be completed without an extra visit.
