stuck tub faucet shower diverter

I have one that does not use a set screw. Tried to turn it with a screw driver as well as a large pipe wrench. I don't want to put any more torque on it for fears of hurting the plumbing behind the wall. The shower surround is one of those one piece drop in type made of plastic, so I don't want to damage the area behind the faucet as well. I've read a few post online with suggesting of "pealing away" the faucet, any tips? What type of tools and where should I cut? Thanks,
