Strange Clog

I have a strange clog in my shower, I have never seen anything like it happen. But for all I know it could be very common.

My issue is that the drain is draining fine then all of a sudden it will stop draining, and start to fill up then all of a sudden it will drop down and flow fine, and it will just keep repeating this..

I removed the drain grate and augured the 8' of line until it connects to the main line, nothing came out.. My second shower, and all other drains appear to be working correctly as far as I can tell.

Any ideas?

Did this just start happening or has it been an ongoing issue?

Sounds like the vent for the shower is clogged.

Just started happening over the past month.. I never though of checking the vent, I can pop that cover and try to auger that and then the drain in case it drops anything down into there..

Its a tub shower it it vents at the top of the tub where there is a metal plate about 3" in diameter, correct?

Nope, the vent is a line that runs all the way to the roof.

No, the cover is your tub overflow. The vent for the drain is going to be in the wall or your main stack depending upon your plumbing layout.

What kind of piping do you have? PVC/ABS/Copper/Cast Iron/Galvanized?

All ABS drain lines.

Sounds like this could be more work that I thought :censored:

I have two or three vents coming out of the roof..

Or can I just shove a garden hose down them??

Seems odd that only this drain is acting up though, all other drains/toilets are working as normal.

A hose might do the trick unless the vent is a branch. I'm thinking the blockage is closer to the tub side than the roof. Do you have access to the plumbing from below or a wall access panel?
