Storm Sewer Backwater Valve Failure

During a recent storm, my floor drain flapper type backwater valve failed. The water was mostly contained (a little water surged up through the floor drain), but the gastket failing on the top of the housing leaked continuously until the storm was over.
The gasket itself seems to look fine. It is still pliable and free of cracks. Is it safe to assume that if I replace it, all will be fine?
