Slip-fit adaptor won't fit!

I'm trying to install a universal tub spout, and the 1/2" slip fit adaptor won't fit my 1/2" copper pipe because I can't get past the rubber ring. I know it's supposed to be snug, and I've sanded the pipe to get rid of any possible burs, but I'm at the end of my rope. I tried lubricating with soap but it did not work, and am thinking maybe machine grease might help slip it on.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

If it is it's very slight and not noticable to the eye. No matter, though, i finally got it on. I got some machine grease from the local Home Depot and after some grunting and straining I was able to shove it on.

Thanks!
