Sink sludge - wrong soap?

I had to re-seal my bathroom sink drain with putty, since the gasket that came with the faucet and stopper failed after 1 year. I have no idea why I would have sludge in the overflow chamber of the drain, but I did. the drain pipes were almost spotless.

What soap should I use to help prevent sludge buildup in the drain? I've heard of "green" soaps that don't use animal fats, but haven't seen any to buy.
