sink popup lever

I had to replace the ball today because I could not raise/lower the stopper. Determined that the ball was cracked. Went to HD and got a replacement lever, but neither the original nut nor the replacement ball/lever had a seal. Initially, I tried the smaller ball, but it leaked. I installed the larger ball, and no leaks. Because there is no seal, and to allow ease of raising/lowering the stop, have people used a dollop of silicone grease/sealant?

I never had to use silicone or grease, they usually come with a ball washer for the opening, and a tapered washer inside the pivot nut. May have already been in there and you just didn't notice it. No grease or silicone required. Well, no leaks, no drips, no errors, so I say you win regardless.

When I removed the nut, there was no seal inside the nut. When I removed the ball and felt inside, I cleaned out the rust residue from the lever but didn't feel a seal in particular. I'll keep monitoring, and worse case, will apply some silicon grease if necessary. The last thing I want to do is to replace the entire drain.

Apparently the pivot ball is doing a good job. Yea, I hear ya handy man. That's more work and money that doesn't need to be done yet if nothing's leaking.
