Shut off water to replace Moen single shower handle?

I know that you should generally shut off the water whenever you're working on plumbing-- in case anything breaks-- but my wife just got in a huff because I told her we needed to get to the water shutoff for the shower that's behind a big pile of clothes in the laundry room. Can I replace the handle and twist the stem (the thing was also set up with the hot and cold reversed) without turning off the water? I plan on turning off the water to the house anyway-- just in case-- but again, if it's possible for something to break in here I'll have no water in the entire house until I fix it.

I know that messing with the cartridge would require shutting off the water, but I've heard that is not required with Moen-- just twisting the stem.

I also realize the easy answer is to grab some baskets to get the laundry out of the way. If you agree, then you are being logical and that is not allowed.

If you pull the clip the water pressure must be off.
You can rotate the stem with the water on and the handle removed

When you think about it, pretty obvious, right? So I twisted the stem 180 degrees to get it oriented correctly. Worked fine, of course. But the handle didn't, because the Danco replacement-- supposedly for Moen-- used a 1/2" adapter when it needed 1". D'oh.

Which style of moen is it?

IF it's the posi-temp valve, and the hot/cold are reversed, you WILL NEED to shut off the water, pull the cartridge, and rotate the entire thing.

If it's a moentrol valve, then all you need to do is remove the handle, and stops, and rotate the stem 180*

"No problem honey...
I'll just go down to the basement and shut it off at the main instead."

... and if the cartridge falls apart, you have no water in the house until it's fixed.
