Shower Valves - Two different sizes on old galvanized pipes

Hey guys, I was going to replace some valves in my shower today and ran across a problem.. We have old galvanized pipes and each valve is 2 different sizes. I went to home depot and the guy said my old choice is to cut out all the old pipes and thread some new ones to put in a whole new (fixture?). I was wondering if anyone had any ideas (and possibilities of using adapters on new valves). Here are a couple of pictures of what I'm working with.

It looks like you have 1/2" galv. pipe. Isn't your new valve 1/2" also?

Two things;
1) The riser going to the shower head will likely need to be replaced. Working with galvanized pipes is a little tricky and it would probably be easier for you to cut the riser for the shower and replace it. Also replace the line going to the tub spout.
2) if you bought a similar valve to the one you've shown, you'll just need to take the unions loose completly from the pipe and screw the new unions on (should have came with new valve)
