Shower valve for rainshower head

We are installing a ceiling mount rain shower head in our master bath. It is a large shower and has a regular wall mounted shower head and handle that will be completely separate from the rain head. Can we use a separate regular shower handle/valve to control the rain shower head? I've seen some valve handles that have two controls, where you can control the water pressure and temp separately, but they are pretty pricy. If we can get by with just a regular 1 handle shower valve that's what I'd like to do. Any input? Thanks!
