Shower Valve question

I have this shower valve:

I believe it has a 5/8" ID on the threaded connections. can I use 1/2" copper pipe (5/8" OD) and solder the connection instead of using a threaded connection? how far should the copper go into the valve to create a good connection?

It should go in at least 1/2". Make sure you take the guts out before you sweat the pipe.

I will definately do that. just wasn't sure if it was ok to sweat copper to brass at a threaded connection.

Their should be stops, a point where the copper pipe won't go in any further yet isn't touching the cartridge. That's how deep you want to go with the pipe.

any special tips for soldering brass to copper? will a 1lb propane torch do the job or should I go with mapp gas?
