shower and tub spout both run when tub is on

I have a shower and tub with separate hot and cold handles.
When I run the tub only, water dribbles out of the shower head.
Is there a diverter valve or something that I should look in to replacing?
Thanks.

Does your tub spout have a pop-up diverter on it? Or do you have a diverter lever on the wall near the handles?

Replace the tub diverter spout if the spout has an operable diverter in it. I'd bet that'll do it. They unscrew counterclockwise.

Its the pull up style diverter that is integrated in to the spout.
I should just replace the whole spout is what your saying?
I might as well, I replaced everything else in the shower except the spout.

The one thing that you didn't say was how old this valve was and whether this just started. If it just started then it is probably the spout. If the valve was just installed or this is an ongoing problem, it is possible the valve is upside down. Again, if it was working OK before then this isn't the problem.

If the spout doesn't solve it and the valve isn't upside down, the only other outside possibility is that the venturi tube in the valve itself has gone bad or broken. This is a little component in the valve body that directs the flow of water to the spout opening so the shower head doesn't do exactly what yours is doing. It's rare for this to go wrong, just thought it was worth mentioning.

Did you use pex for the tub spout?

I don't know the age of the spout.
I don't know if this has been an issue in the past- I had renters in the house and now they are out and I just happened to notice this issue once I turned the water on to test some plumbing connections.
No pex involved.
I'll likely try replacing the spout and see where that gets me.
