Shower Stem troubles - Putty v. Tape?

I just finished my new shower and I have a very slow, but steady, leak at the shower stem. I installed the stem using pipe dope and let it dry for 24 hours, yet I have a drip about every ten seconds.
I used dope on the other connections without a problem, though with the angle to the stem I'm limited in how far I can turn/tighten. Would teflon tape be a better choice in this use case? Any other suggestions would be very welcome.

What I've read suggests using tape but like joecaption said I'd use dope and tape and it should definitely seal it. Let us know if it still leaks.

Pictures of the faucet would help. You shouldn't have to use tape dope or pipe dope to seal this... there are probably other o-rings, gaskets and whatnot that should be sealing the stem. Especially if its a new one

Invest in some stem wrenches to give yourself better access- and put the pipe sealant and tape away- not needed on a stem repair

Follow ben & ben's instructions

Are you referring to a stem coming out of a 2 handle faucet,or a gooseneck coming out of the wall for shower head to install to?
If its the gooseneck to the shower head Id suggest using good sealer like rector seal on the threads before installing it.
