Shower pan pre-pitch/pre-slope necessary?

I am remodeling our shower and plan to do the tile work myself, but did hire a plumber to install a new shower drain and membrane. He told me that it was not necessary to install a pre-pitch/pre-slope over the subfloor and under the membrane and that most contractors in my area don't do it. This concerns me as I have read that a pre-pitch is required or at least advisable.

Is the plumber right that this is something I can skip?
