Shower leaking threw ceiling....please help

Our master bedroom shower has started to cause a big leak in the kitchen ceiling on the 1st floor.

Any ideas on what could be the problem? Where would be a good place to start locating the leak itself?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

You need to figure out the following:

1. Is it leaking only when you run the water? If so only when showering or also when tub is run.

2. Is it leaking even if no water has been run. If so you have a leaking water pipe.

3. If it leaks only when you shower can it be the tile or caulk?

Ok, start like this.

Run water down the drain making sure no water gets on anything but the drain. See if you get a leak. If not you can say the faucet and the drain are good. Then point the shower on the tile at different spots and see if you can get it to leak.

is it a shower stall or a tub?

if shower stall most leaks happen when your drain is clogged/slow and the water backs up under the membrane or pan.

It's a shower stall and it actually was clogged up the day we realized it was leaking. So do we just have to watch it for clogs and see if it continues to leak?

Is it a plastic pan or a tile pan? pan meaning the floor of the shower.

Does it leak when you just run water down the drain? and how deep was the water in the pan when it was clogged?

i'm 110% sure i know the problem if you tell me its a shower stall and the drain was clogged (slow drain) when it started to leak.

its critical you keep the drain flowing freely.. when the drain is slow and you have water pooling at your feet it means the water is backing up and when it backs up it goes up and under all the drain assembly stuff. when put all the drain parts together its designed to stay water tight for water running DOWN, not up.

If you unclog your drain the leak will stop. i've seen this numerous times. but be warned, every couple of month when that water starts pooling at your feet again you will leak again.
