Shower leaking into closet

My master shower is leaking into the closet. I cut a hole in the closet behind the shower knob, turned on the shower and saw water dripping from above. So, I cut a hole a few feet above that, behind the faucet, only to find that the faucet is attached to a horizontal stud, thus blocking my view of where the leak is actually happening. The shower stall itself is one big plastic unit. I removed the caulking around the faucet and removed the face, but the hole is barely big enough for the faucet to come through, so it doesn't allow me any room to work in there. Any suggestions??? Thank you!

Too back it's not the coat closet, huh?
So nothing gets wet?

You'll have to keep removing sheetrock until you can get to whatever is leaking, and probably, carefully, get that "horizontal stud" separated from the faucet.
You'll either need a sawsall or a catspaw most likely for that.
You need to do some drywall repair anyway, what's a little more?
Try to cut the sheetrock at center of the adjacent studs, straight and square, to make that repair a little easier on yourself once you fix the leak.

One more thing: Make sure the leak isn't coming from where the shower head screws into the fitting, and it's not just simply a matter of a couple of turns.
Of course if this was the case, it would only leak when you turned the shower on.

Remove the shower arm---dope (tfe paste) and teflon tape--then re install

That might be all you need to do---

First rule of any repair....try the easy simple things first.

Second rule of any repair.....if you have to cut into drywall....make the hole big....a big hole is easier to repair than several little ones.

I would do what Mike suggests.....it's not uncommon for the head to be replaced and in the process the arm gets loosened...breaks the teflon tape seal....and then leaks.

I've seen that all to often--that's why the DOPE and tape---it's very easy to knock the tape loose when slipping that chrome tube into the wall----

Most common leak point in a shower wall in my world----
