Shower Issue

I went to look at a side job a couple of days ago where the client has a missing diverter spout on the shower. Normally easy to replace. But the one thing I noticed this time around that instead of a straight copper stub out coming off the wall, I saw a piece that had been sweat on the end that looked like a stopper piece. It's not threaded and it's a little wider than a normal copper union. It looks like it was just there to "stop" the diverter from going any further than that point.

I've not gone anywhere yet to look at new diverter's to see what can be done, but I'm afraid if I cut it off I won't have enough pipe for the new diverter.

Has anyone else ever seen this before? I'm going to try to get a picture of what I'm talking about and I'll post it as soon as I can.

No, this is the closest thing I could find.

Only the one that is on the stub out is missing the threads (imagine the picture with the threads cut off), and instead of having a hex shape to get wrench on it was perfectly round. Hence why I said it looks more like a stop to me. Like maybe in the old diverter is butted up next to a gasket of some sort.

Here's another image, this one is a little closer to what it looks like. Again with ZERO threads and a round rim, no hex.

I wonder of the old spout was a thread on and the old threaded part of the spout is still on the pipe---
