Shower faucette leaking - trouble removing spindle

Hi all,
I have a Symmons temptrol shower faucette that is leaking. I did an internet search, and found this video that talked about replacing the spindle.
My shower assembly looks exactly the same as in the video. I got to the part of the video that it is at 1:10 in. Removing the spindle. It was very difficult to start to remove. I finally got it to budge, and thought I was going to be home free. However, it never got easier. Now, it has a whole half turn that it will go easily either way, but is not any easier to come off. It seems like something is wrong to me. It looks like there is a black washer along the thread that it is turning on that might be binding on? Should I just continue struggling with it until I eventually get it off? I just don't want to ruin anything. Something doesn't seem right. Thanks for any advice anyone can provide.

Before you started to remove the spindle, did you open the valve (like you would to turn on the water). The black washer isn't very thick so if it's turning it's not binding. When it starts to get touch, screw it back in a little then try to remove it again. You can also try a little oil on the threads.

Thank you both very much for your help. Your responses gave me the confidence to keep going with it. I took the advice, opened the valve and oiled the threads. I got it out! Thanks!

Now the next problem. The only thing I replaced was the spindle. When I got it back together and tried it, the range of motion is very small. It only goes a quarter turn now, and I get no hot water at all. Any ideas what I might have done wrong? Thanks again.

You probably need to adjust the hot limit screw. It's the small screw on the spindle. Turn the screw counterclockwise a bunch of times. Turn the water to the hottest temp you want then turn the screw back in. Very important if you have small children.

U can try this, see if it helps. It was attached to your video.

shut offs to shower wide open? the spindle has a pressure balancing valve,it could be stuck letting more cold water in.Before you change the spindle check the little brass screw in the spindle housing. If you stop my video a 1:00 you can see it. that screw is used to control the temp. Screwed in it keeps the temp cooler screwed out it should get warmer in temp be careful not to go too far as it will get hot like your facets. Go a little bit and try it and repeat. let me know if it solved it.

Good Job Guys, I thought it didn't work because it was French. "Faucette"?
