Shower Diverter questions...
Hi all -
I have a 20+ year old diverter in my shower/tub. There is a small drip coming from the tub spout, and if you turn/push the shower handle in at the right spot, the drip will stop; so I'm assuming I must have some sort of broken washer/part in the diverter.
Question 1: From the pics you can see I exposed the unit, removed the retaining clip and tried to pull out the assembly but couldn't budge it. Does anyone know if this diverter cannot be rebuilt (as in, not a "removable assembly")? Do I need to replace the entire diverter...if so, eek!
Question 2: If I do need to replace the diverter, there isn't enough room to work in there. The other side of the wall is the corner of the kitchen and cabinets, so I can't come in from behind. The shower walls are a 1-piece assembly, and chances are it won't come out easily and would have to replace the tub walls (could be a nice tile upgrade! :)). Suggestions?
Sorry for the long post, thanks for any help!!
You need a cartridge puller. Lots of models.. cheap and not so cheap, but looks something like this.
Pull the set pin you showed in your picture (don't drop it behind the wall), then screw the cartridge puller into the cartridge, brace yourself, and pull. If you're worried about dropping it, take a long piece of dental floss and tie it through the little hole on top and hang onto it while you pull it out with some needle nose pliers.
Replace it with a new cartridge (appears to be Moen1225b)
Replace the set pin.
Put everything back together.
Great directions---I'll add one simple step--roll up a sheet of fine sand paper and clean up the inside of the valve body--
That unit has it's own shut offs--however ,after twenty years I'd be afraid to use them.(shut offs are the little screws on the left and right.
Sometimes they can be stubborn and kinda seized in place. Can take a lot of pressure (hence my directions to brace yourself) If it still doesn't come out, a "little" heat from a torch on the valve body won't hurt.
