Shower arm help

So the shower head came off from the shower arm and it revealed a ball at the end. After reading several forums and videos on YouTube, it sounded and looked simple enough for me (it wasn’t) and I had all tools as well. So I decided to change the shower arm. It took me a long time to get the shower arm out and for a second I thought it was rotating free. This is with using the channel lock and vice grips later. It finally came off.
I have attached pictures to show how the shower arm end is and the pipe opening coming through the wall.

What I cannot figure out is following.
-Have I broken something inadvertently. If yes, what do I need to do to set it right?
-What things do I need to keep in mind when I am trying to install the new shower arm and head

Any insight will be appreciated
