Sewer smell in basement

Occasionally I'll get a sewer (rotten egg) smell waft through the entire house that originates in the basement. It's the strongest after using the shower and in the winter. Not sure if winter has anything to do with anything, I figured it was just because the house is closed up more. There is an open drain in the basement that someone hinted could be the problem because it was dry? Any ideas?

Sounds like you are track with a dry drain. A simple cure is to use a cooking oil because it will not evaparate. Just fill the drain.

check all your fixtures in your basement. You may have a floor drain, sink or tub/shower with a dried out trap. run water in them all and see if that helps. and the oil trick helps too.
