Sewer odor in shower

Unfortunately we do not have sewers, but a septic system with a leach field. I seem to recall the builder warning us not to use bleach since it would kill the bacteria needed to make the system work. Is this correct? If so, is there anything I can substitute for the bleach? Is the hydrogen peroxide OK to use?
