Sewage Smell

So this past Thurs/fri my area had a rain storm. Since, my main floor powder room has smelt of sewage. Wife said she saw water from the bottom of the toilet.

I tested a few times and didn't see anything but went ahead and replaced the wax seal. When I had the toilet off no smell. Put the toilet back on with new seal and still no change. Sewage smell; and its only one bathroom it's confined to

Anyone have any ideas?

Town sewer or septic?
Is this bathroom used every day, including the sink?
Did you check for weak spots around toilet while it was out?
Is this a new house to you?

Sewer. Everyday inc the sink. Toilet looks ok. I was thinking of replacing anyway but was planning on waiting awhile still. Been in the house 2 years. Never this problem before .

Sewage Smell

So someone suggested pouring hot soapy water into the drain for the washing machine and bleach into an empty toilet as flush till its gone. Did this and the problem was resolved for a few hours then came back.
Any help??

Just a suggestion, did wax ring make good seal? Round side on toilet bottom flat side around flange? Another suggestion, sometimes you may need two or a bigger/thicker wax ring to make a good seal. Check out these two links when you get a chance. Homeowner had a similar problem. It may buy you some time until your ready for a whole new toilet. Wax rings are only a couple bucks. New toilet is couple hundred bucks depending on brand. It still may not solve your problem, some pro's will be here soon to give you some better advice.

extra thick wax ring

Check the water level in the toilet bowl not the tank a toilet with a leak in the trap will let gasses in, next step have a smoke test done on the system you'll know for sure.

Well, what I pulled off was what looked like a rubber/foam sort of gasket.

This was what i replaced it....

weird thing is, when i had the toilet off i really didn't smell anything. Until hours after the toilet was back on.
What about the water level in the bowl?

Sewage Smell

Failed AAV? (Air Admittance Valve)

This sort of thing only happens in an improper original installation---Consider getting a smoke test--
