septic tank hole

a fire truck ran over my septic tank and now there is a hole in the top. Can i still use the shower and the toilet untill it gets repaired? Guess this is a better problem to have rather then having my house burn down from a brush fire!!

Obviously you will want to replace the cap as soon as possible to prevent a small child, animals, trash, dirt and rain water from washing in but I see no danger in continuing to use the tank until you replace the cap. Worse case scenario is you could potential overflow the tank with water that wouldnt drain into the leach field as quickly as in a closed system.

YOU WILL WANT TO HAVE THE TANK PUMPED AND ANY TRASH OR DEBRIS
FROM THE BROKEN TOP REMOVE FROM THE TANK,

IF YOU TELL THE PUMP CO. OVER THE PHONE THE PROBLEM SO THEY CAN BE PREPARED TO ENTER IF NEEDED TO PICK STUFF INSIDE THEY CAN ALSO
REPAIR THE TOP LID OF THE TANK OR REFER YOU TO SOME ONE ELSE
WHO CAN THEN MAKE THE NEEDED REPAIRS

Dr. Macplumb you forgot to mention that it's a good idea to keep open flames away from the methane leak.

You can continue as normal.
The gas from a septic is a mixture of minor gases and methane and carbon dioxide it is not at all likely to catch fire.
The thing to take into account is, an open septic will be effected by rain and surface water, when this enters above the floating crust it makes it smell - not very nice.
Do cover it to stop people and animals falling in.............. and the rain!

I hate to say this, but you should call the township health official and let them know what happened. In my state that's who has say-so on septic systems. Anything to do with the tank or leach field has to go through them. If the tank was breached in any way, they're going to want to know about it and probably want to bless its condition and any temporary covers and whatnot.

There is also the question as to who is responsible for the damage, the driver or his employer, who's insurer will pay for the cost of repair or replacement?
