Septic pump stopped working after I unplugged it

My septic ejector pump was running for several days none stop and I unplugged it thinking it would reset. When I plugged it in it stopped working and when I flushed the toilet in the basement it water came up from the drain in the floor.

Might be clogged line; pump may have run continuously since it couldn't move the fluids/junk from the sump pit through the discharge line. When you flushed, the water had to go somewhere; out the drain it came. I'd call a plumbing person personally.

Is there a way to check and clean it?

Take the cover off the sump pit and see if it is full. It may back up into the space your are in when the cover is removed so be prepared. That's why I'd get a plumbing person to do this unless you're prepared for the mess and know how/be willing to unclog a drain line.
Do other drains in the house work? Does water come out of floor drain when other water is drained from other locations in the house?

All the other drains work on the first and second floor work and do not cause water to come up from the basement drain when used. It's just the basement bathroom and washer that causes the back up now.

well, it doesn't sound good. It was running continuously for a reason. Either it wasn't pumping as it should or the controls have a problem. If it ran dry for a long time, you may have burned up the motor as most pumps use the pumped medium as a source of cooling.

how handy are you? Comfortable with electricity? If not, call in somebody to work on this. If you are, start with describing the system as best as you can. Maybe some pics.
