septic field diverter valve - which field is which?

Hey all - see my attached sketch. I have two septic fields with a diverter valve. But I can't figure out which field is which.

In peering down the riser tube, the valve head is a rectangle shape. I've got a long rod with a T on top and a small U on the bottom.

Using the picture as reference, the valve head only turns 1/4 turn. So it would either be aligned north/south in the picture, or turned clockwise and be positioned east/west. Go counterclockwise 1/4 turn, and it's back to north/south.

I'm wondering if the flow would go the same direction as the head is aligned. So based on the sketch, if the valve head was north/south longwise, it would flow to the old field.

I'm not just familiar with valve types. Perhaps if the valve was north/south longwise, the flow would be through it east/west - and in my case, that would be to my new field.

I believe you are correct---the flow typically follows the alignment of the slot or T-handle coupling.
