Sealing Threads on water feed in shower

I have a decorative water feed for my shower hose. It needs to be mounted against ceramic tile, so I can't crank down tight on it. The brass nipple that goes through the wall threads into a female elbow in the wall. I have have used teflon tape and threaded the nipple into the decorative fitting and now need to thread it into the elbow inside the wall. I have the best length nipple that isn't too long.
This means when I thread it into the elbow, it does not tighten all the way into the elbow. I can't keep tightening it or I will crack the tile. I have plenty of thread into the elbow, I just can't bottom out the nipple all the way into the elbow. What should I use to assure the nipple/elbow threaded joint does NOT leak in the wall?
Teflon tape or joint dope? or both?? Thanks for your help

A Longer Nipple.......

No amont of Pipe Dope or Pipe Tape will seal a fitting left Loose......
