Screw hole on shower valve broke off

I was installing the handle and plate for my new shower control and the screw went in a little crooked and broke off the tab that the screw hole is on. The valve is still in place behind the wall, I just have only one screw hole now instead for two for my shower trim. What can I do to fix this without replacing the valve? I don't have the option of opening the wall behind to replace the valve because there is another brand new tiled shower on the back side. Please help!

Screw hole on shower valve broke off

Un screw the single screw remove the cover and look at it.

Is there any meat left to get a hold of?

If there is get a pair of pliers or vice grips and try to turn it out.

If not buy a real small set of easy outs and try them to get it out.

Relax take your time, the problem you might have here is the threads are stripped in the main valve you might have to run a tap through them and switch to 1 larger screw.

Screw hole on shower valve broke off

Hi guys, thanks for the quick replies. I was able to get a pic of the shower valve. Notice the hole on the upper left in photo, there should be a screw hole on the lower right as well. When I was attaching the trim plate, the screw appears to have started going in a little bit crooked, so that leverage caused the little ear to break off. I was using a drill, but going slow and I wasn't applying excessive pressure or anything and I wasn't getting the feeling like the screw was having trouble going in. I had it almost all the way tightened and then there was just a "pop". I backed both screws out to remove the trim to see what the noise was from. Thats when I found the ear broken off.

This can't be the first time something like this has happened. I'm hoping there is an easier fix than trying to replace the valve. I just finished my tile job and can't bear the thought of having to rip anything out!

Any tips?

I suggest gluing a wood or plastic strip to the backside of the backer board and then use a stainless steel wood screw.
