P Trap

I'm replacing my bathroom petalstool sink. I removed the sink from the wall and water lines. I left part of the "P" trap in place (the down spout). My wife ran the washer machine and water came out when the washer went to it's rinse cycle. Is this normal? Should I have left the the "P" trap on?

My home is on a slab and the washer is on the same floor.

No it isn't normal. That means the water draining from the washer is filling the DVW system up to at least the point of that P trap. Probably a partially stopped or undersized line. Could be the waste for the washer is incorrectly piped as well.

Thanks. It's probably stopped as I have had stopped problems before.
