Running pipe through joists

I need to run 1" copper pipe in my basement that will cross 2 joists.. Is a 1.25" hole too big to put in a joist? I think (have to verify) the basement has 2x6 joists - possibly 2x8, I can verify when I get home.

Running under the joists isn't really an option due to the low ceiling. There's a dropped ceiling, but there isn't roomfor a pipe that big between the dropped ceiling and the joists.

Thanks.

That hole should be fine. From what I understand, the pipe can be no closer to the edge of the joist than 2" and no larger than 1/3 the actual size of the joist. Seems to me a 1.25 inch hole is well within those limits.

Thanks. I actually just found this in the NY Building Code:
