Request for Drilling Procedures
I'm attempting to DIY drill 230ft deep x 4in. diameter holes for geothermal loops. I have overburden earth for 50ft. then rock. What is best sequence to drill and insert casing through the overburden?
1. Drill 6in. hole to rock to loosen a pathway, then start inserting 4in. casing with 4in bit inside casing to clear path in loosened soil for casing to move forward, or
2. Start with 4in. bit inside of 4in. casing and forward drill say 5ft. then drive casing through the undersized holefor 5 ft.?

wish I could give you some info on the sequence, but I'm thinking you need to talk to the rental company that is going to rent you the equipment. That is going to be some heavy duty drilling. You might want to get a sample of the rock type you'll be going through, all rock is not created equal when it comes to drilling.

So you will be using the big 1/2 inch drill chuck, right? Hehehehehee

This is a DIY site, and drilling for geothermal is not a DIY project.
