replcing thermocouple on hot water heater

my hot water heater will not stay lit, i have to relight pilot over and over to get water hot, once hot, the heater turns off and does not relight again.

the existing thermocouple has a diffedrent feature than the replacement one. is that normal?

Is this a Whirlpool water heater? If so, there is a known issue with the valve causing the problem you describe. If you contact Whirlpool they may replace the valve for you.
