Replacing a water valve to toilet

I need to replace the water valve to our toilet. There is a compression fitting on the copper tubing and I can't get the old compression ring off. What do I do?

Cut it off with a pipe cutter. Clean up the pipe with some very high grit sandpaper until it is nice and smooth and round.
You can then replace with new compression fitting or solder a new one( better IMO).

Make sure you turn off the water before you start.

If I cut it off, it will make the copper pipe too short to be able to attach the new valve!

Have you tried a dremel to cut the ring?

Nevermind probably squashed on good. You may need to take off some drywall so you can add a new section of pipe.

I thought about that but I am afraid of damaging the copper pipe in doing so. I may have to try it. Thanks

Never tried it myself but this "might" work (uses the heat expands, cold contracts principle):

Put a rag or paper towel in some ice water. Heat the brass compression fitting with a pin point propane torch or even maybe a match or lighter. While still hot, wrap the cold rag around the copper pipe (not the compression ring) to try to shrink the copper pipe. Use a pliers to try to rotate the ring without nicking the pipe.

Man, I just reuse the old nut and ferrule and screw the new valve on. It usually works.

Me too. Or I use a ferrule puller.
