replacing a valve on a regular propane tank

ok, somewhat of an unusual question ...

i am trying to modify a regular, Blue Rhino, propane tank, the kind you get at Home Depot or Lowes, so that the valve is pointing upwards for direct camping attachment mounting. they normally point sideways, designed for a hose to lead to a stove, etc.

i was thinking to take the whole regulator out, since it looks like it's threaded on, and replace it with another one (if i can find one) that fits it and the socket is compatible with camping attachments and is on top. e.g. a cooking burner etc.

i am just annoyed with running out of propane with little Coleman 1 qt. tanks that cost like $4. this way i could also cook on my deck without a separate stove/grill, with an burner twisted directly on.

but my question is: is it possible to disassemble a regular propane tank like that and replace the regulator piece ?

Tiey make an adapter hose with large tank fitting one end and small appliance fitting on the other. Try a sporting goods store.
