Replacing Slow Basement toilet

Our home was built in 1986. Our basement toilet was installed at that time. We rented the house for 15 years and have recently re-occupied it. I don't remember that the toilet was slow when we first lived in the house, but it is very slow now, and unreliable in removing waste. We are thinking about replacing it with a new water-saving one, an American Standard FloWise Cadet 3. We are hoping it will work better, but are wondering if in reality it will be worse. We are hoping for some feedback from folks who have had a similar situation ... is a new toilet a solution for an old slow one in a basement, or not?

Thank you!

Replacing Slow Basement toilet

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Personally, I love my FlushMate. Po)
But any toilet you choose may not help the problem with the flush if there's a gunked up drain line.

Replacing Slow Basement toilet

Yup, that's one of the things we're thinking, too. However, none of the other drains in the house, or even the basement, are slow, and we hate to pay the $200 the plumber we called wants to check with a camera if it's just the toilet. But I can see where it's probably a good idea to just suck it up and get the sewer line checked.

Thanks for your suggestion!

I have found popcicle sticks and pocket combs in the trap inside the bowl a couple times over the years. I have 2 kids (both now grown) and they tried everything. If your inclined, you can take the bowl up and look up inside the trap. You will be well served to get a new wax ring before doing so.
