Replacing shower spigot

In my house there are no shut off valves to the shower. I have a single handle shower control made by Delta. I would like to replace it with a newer one. Could I replace the shower control and etruscan trim with another single handle Delta set without shutting off the water?

Nope. In order to change out a valve body or valve cartridge, you have to shut off the water supply. It just can't be done any other way.

The escutcheon could be changed without killing the water. You simply take off the handle and unscrew the old one.
