replacing shower cartridge

I finally received my FREE MOEN cartridge replacement from MOEN.

I am attempting to pull the old cartridge out (18 years old) and I am having a hell of a time doing so. I followed the instructions and after removing the retaining clip, it shows that the old cartridge should slide right out......uh, not the case.

I am trying to pull out the cartridge as the instructions say and I am getting little pieces at a time. It's falling apart. Now I am down to a nub. I am attaching some pics of the results as well as the new cartridge. How the heck to I get out whats left?

(Pictures show, the existing shower control with whats left inside, pieces that broke off, as well as the new cartridge waiting to go in)

Oh, DAMN---You should have used a Moen cartridge pulling tool.

Was that mentioned in the instructions?

Now you are in a mess---post a picture of that's left in the valve body--

I might be able to help you save that mess--a call to a local plumber might be in store if you haven't the nerve for a risky process.

oh'mike

The MOEN customer service chic told me that the cartridge comes with a plastic tool to help remove it.

it said to place plastic tool on cartridge, turn 45 degrees, then pull cartridge out with pliers.......which i did, then the cartridge started breaking off.

The picture I posted (picture #1) shows all that is left. it's the spot right behind the rubber o-ring. know where im talking?

if you need more pix, let me know

thank you

There is a metal tool for removing a cartridge---screws into the faucet handle hole--then has huge nut that pulls the thing straight out---

Yes--a picture of the valve body and what's stuck in there.

I must warn you---if you attempt to do this your self you could permanently ruin the valve body---costing you hundreds to replace.

If you understand the risk and wish to try--I'll try to walk you through this.

There are some great plumbers here--we can help.

well, that plastic cover is prohibiting me from getting a picture of what's inside. The picture I am showing is only the picture of the front.

what exactly is that plastic cover anyways? how do you remove it without ruining anything?

I'm not sure if I am against this procedure or not. How difficult is it? I'd love to save me money obviously but what is the process and what can happen?

You don't need to pull off that cover---you must work on digging out the broken cartridge from the hole --that's it.

A few drill bits--some screws for pulling out the broken plastic and whats left of the shaft--

If you gouge the inside of the valve body--game lost---time to rip out tile and install a new valve.

Steady hands and strong nerves--
You might want to call a plumber.

This is the tool that you should have used--Moen Cartridge Puller - How To Use a Moen Cartridge Puller

You have the new cartridge in hand--so you can see what you are trying to dig out--

If you can get the rest of the shaft out --the rest is just plastic and can be collapsed and pulled out with long nose pliers after you drill and weaken it---

This puller works on broken cartridges. But the stem has to come out first.

You need to remove the remaining brass stem from the center, so you may still need to. The skinny part of the tool is inserted down the center and the little pin on the end fits into the notch on the cartridge- reference it on your new one. Then you pull , wiggle and cuss till it comes out. Not guaranteed to work but usually does.

some times a small pair of locking pliers (vise grips) will let you grab the little stub--

I am trying this first!!

Do I need to pull straight out or can i twist left and right and opull at the same time to break it loose?? Is there anything holding it towards the back of the valve? Since I can't see back there, I don't know whats going on.

You must pull straight out---If you can get a grip on the stub--Tap the vice grips out from the wall--or use a wood block to protect the tile and pry it straight out using a lever of some sort---

the valve body is just a straight hole --the same size as the cartridge---

When you finally do get the old broken cartridge out--roll up a sheet of sandpaper and clean up the inside of the valve body---flush out any grit ant then install the cartridge, using the lubricant that came with the new part.

Just keep working on it--you will get it out---
