Replacing a pop up stopper on a pedestal sink

We are replacing the faucets on our pedestal sink. We are having a hard time installing the pop up stopper. Do we have to remove the pedestal sink from the wall or can this be done with the sink still attached to the wall?

Most often there's just not enough room to remove or tighten the nut with it mounted to the wall.
I mount the faucet and the drain while it's off and test it to make sure it's able to be fully opened and closed and not sticking and remount it to the wall.
