Replacing hot water valve

Dishwasher went out, so bought a new one...

Now the packing on the dishwasher hot water valve leaks (wall right angle valve), so I have to replace the valve.

So I have to turn off the main, and since it's a two story house, I'll have to drain the hot water using the kitchen sink and then capture what's left in the dishwasher line (on the ground floor.)

My question is, will the cold water from the 2nd story go through the water heater and out the 1st story hot water line? Do I need to isolate the water heater (turning it off of course)?

thanks.

You are over thinking this. Just go to the faucet at the lowest level, open both the Hot & Cold water faucets, only after you have turned off the Water Heater & shut off the main. Then go to the highest level, and also open both the Hot & Cold water taps.

When they are finished draining, just replace the valve, then reverse the process. Remember to keep the taps open, to allow any air that came into the system, to be pushed out, but only by slowly turning on the main water valve.

When you are done getting the air out of the system, you will be fine after that.

More only comes out if you have a bad shutoff somewhere.
