Replacing/Fixing leaky shutoff valve under sink
Hello Everyone,

I'm trying to deal with a leaky shutoff valve beneath the bathroom sink and ran into some problems.

First, I can't seem to remove the plastic cap coverings on the valve knob. I'd like to disassemble the front end and inspect the washers and maybe reseat them in case they're still usable. I've tried to pry and pull them off with no luck - I don't want to break them. Any suggestions?

Skip this and just replace the whole valve?

just replace the whole thing
Don't bother trying to repair it. For under $10 you can buy a new shutoff. Use a compression connection and you're done in under 20 minutes start to finish and no soldering.

"adpanko" is correct! I tried once to take one of those plastic stop valves apart, with no luck. I keep stop valves in my trailer and I spent as much time fooling with that %#*@ valve than it did to replace it. The only possible problem--you may have to turn off the main water supply--just a bit more time. David

Thanks to both.

Looks like the easiest way to go.

I'm more worried about getting the nut on the valves rear loose from the incoming main line which I think is PVC. The valve nut is metal. Looks like someone may have gotten paint across the junction which is going to make it a little harder to get off.

Any major risk in cracking the main PVC?

if its just the packing thats leaking youve got nothing to lose by trying to tighten packing nut under handle first, you dont need to remove handle to do this.
